• Clear information
about the goods or services you are purchasing
• Written confirmation of the above should also
be given after the purchase has been made
• A ‘cooling off’ period in which
an order can be cancelled without any reason and a
refund given.
• A full refund if the goods or services are
not provided by the date agreed. (If a date has not
been agreed then 30 days)
However, there are some situations whereby these rights
do not apply:
• Financial services (insurance or banking for
example)
• Online Auctions
• Contracts which involve the sale of land
Credit Cards are a fantastic
way to purchase goods online because many credit card
companies offer a buying online protection. If you
have a claim against the seller for breach of contract
or misrepresentation, (for example if the goods were
received faulty or never arrived), you may also have
a claim against your credit card issuer. You do not
have this same protection if you pay by debit or charge
card.
If someone uses your credit
card fraudulently on the Internet you may again be
covered by your issuer and will therefore not be liable
for any amount spent. It is vital however that you
check with your credit company as not all companies
offer online protection. Again, despite all the media
hype, credit card fraud on the internet is actually
quite rare and is much more likely to take place through
forged signatures and stolen cards.
