Concern is growing over the
rise in credit card fraud and the EC are looking to
launch a three year plan to combat credit card fraud.
This will include a free phone number across Europe
for consumers who have lost their credit card or been
a victim of fraud.
Although it is unlikely that
you will be a victim of credit card fraud, if it does
happen to you it can be very distressing. There are
ways in which you can help protect yourself against
credit card fraud such as:
• Before giving out your details online
check that the site is secure. You will normally see
a small padlock icon at the bottom of the screen but
beware as this alone does not guarantee safety. Check
to see if the site uses encryption when passing on
credit card details, this should mean that your credit
card details are secure.
• Check that the company you are buying from
is a reputable company.
• Keep an eye on your credit card when paying
in a shop to see how it is being used.
• Keep safe or rip up receipts with your credit
card details on as these can be used to purchase goods
by telephone and online.
Despite credit card fraud being
a real possibility purchasing goods and services by
credit card is actually one of the safest forms of
payment. This is because most credit card companies
will protect you against someone using your card without
your permission and be liable for any payments. Worst
case scenario is that you would be liable for up to
£50 however, it is usual that you would pay
nothing (unless you can be proven to be liable such
as leaving your pin number with your credit card).
It is a good idea to choose
a credit card that offers fraud protection so that
you have peace of mind and know that you are covered.
Most cards do offer this but it is important to check
first as this is a very important part of your decision.
